This is a place that could be interesting to visit for those -who fancy seeing something different.
The Battery, were the part of the shore defences for Cartagena - the headquarters of the Spanish Mediterranean Fleet, has been built into the mountainside in the style of a castle. Using a lot of local stone also helps it to look more attractive than it is usually assumed for military buildings. The centrepiece is two massive guns at Castillitos with their associated magazines, sighting points, control rooms etc. These two big guns and the entire fortress has established a framework for movie “The Guns of Navarone”. There are also some smaller guns further along the road at Jorel.
A nice drive on small roads leading to the gun post until ca. 1985 was in operation. Enjoy the magnificent views, take a walk on one of the gun tubes and get a sense of their size and capability.
There is a free parking lot and the attendance to this attraction is free of charge.
Note please, that the road is poorly signposted. The guns are at Cabo Tiñoso, which is accessed from the E16 Puerto de Mazarron- Cartagena Road. When you will come to the start of a military road with intimidating warning signs -forbidding passage - ignore these, they just haven't been removed.
